Whisper functions as a communication aid designed to assist the non-verbal community, enabling individuals who do not speak to engage in conversations with others. The non-verbal participant, referred to as the Whisperer, utilizes their device to type their spoken contributions, with their typed text immediately visible on the devices of verbal participants, known as Listeners. These Listeners articulate responses aloud to both the Whisperer and fellow participants.

Conversations facilitated by Whisper are conducted in real-time, with all participants able to hear each other. Participants are trained to observe turn-taking protocols similar to those in typical spoken discourse, refraining from speaking when the Whisperer begins typing. This structure preserves natural conversational flow, even if the Whisperer types slowly, since the first typed letter appears instantaneously on Listener devices.

Whisper supports both in-person interactions and remote communication via audio or video calls. In in-person settings, no internet connection is necessary; however, for remote interactions, a cellular data or Wi-Fi connection is required. Listeners without Apple devices or those who do not have the app can access ongoing conversations through a web browser over cellular data or Wi-Fi.

Each Whisper-facilitated conversation is associated with a unique URL that the Whisperer can share with Listeners to invite participation. Users can create multiple conversation threads tailored to specific contexts, such as recurring conference calls. Listener devices retain memory of previously joined conversations, so rejoining only requires selecting the relevant conversation, eliminating the need for repeated URL sharing.

While primarily designed for users who know each other and have alternative communication channels like messaging or email for sharing URLs, Whisper does not provide Listeners access to content typed before they join. Content typed within a Whisper session cannot be copied by Listeners, and upon the Whisperer's departure from the conversation, all typed content is instantaneously erased from Listener devices.

Privacy considerations are integral to Whisper’s design. The app does not store personally identifiable information; nor does it retain records of conversation histories beyond what is stored securely on users' devices. For users operating multiple devices, Whisper supports secure synchronization of their conversational profiles across platforms.

Whisper is a free and open-source application offered as a community service to support non-verbal individuals worldwide. Currently localized solely in US English, future localization efforts may be undertaken based on user demand in various regions.
